What is the History of the Superstitious Black Cat?

Depending on where in the world you are, a black cat can be seen as either bad luck or good luck. Back in the 16^th century, Italians thought that if someone was sick, they would die if a black cat happened to lay on the bed. In the UK however, black cats can bring bad luck. Some even say that it’s automatic bad luck if a black cat happens to cross your path, and the list goes on and on!

Black cats have long been associated with witchcraft and witches. They are still used today in home décor, party themes at Halloween even costumes as well. This trend really is so engrained in modern day society that a lot of people have forgotten about the ancient beginnings.

It is believed that the black cat became affiliated with evil all the way back in the Middle Ages. This is because cats are said to be nocturnal and they do most of their roaming at night. They were also said to be supernatural servants of those who were up to no good. Some even believe that if a witch changes into a human, that the black cat that accompanies her will no longer roam the house.

All in all, there are even more extreme pieces of history that are all tied to mythology. When you look at several centuries ago, you’ll see that witches were hunted for years on end, with people hunting black cats to try and remove any trace of the witch herself. Things like this are devastating to think about, but it’s important to know the origins of the black cat because it plays such a huge part in the world that we live in today, and it’s also very interesting to see how they are continually shaping the style of our homes.
